ABOUT ME

My journey to event management.

WHO AM I?

My name is Lilia Suraeva, a 20-year-old event management student from Bulgaria, currently studying at Breda University of Applied Sciences. I am passionate about the music industry and aspire to build a career in concert management and artist booking.

My background

Growing up in Bulgaria

I was born on March 24, 2005, in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, where I grew up surrounded by music and dance culture. From a young age I was able to go to piano lessons, gymnastics, modern dance, hip-hop, singing lessons, choirs, etc. From the moment I was born my mother was there to show me what is the art of music. She and her mother had graduated from the music academy in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, so I had a way to get inspired and to get information about the industry I want to join. I had dancing lessons since the beginning of kindergarten and now dancing is one of my passions too. I even was motivated to create a group by myself only at 14 years old age. My childhood was filled with such nice melodies and good choreographies.

Education & early interests

I attended Language School "Geo Milev" (2019-2024) in Dobrich, Bulgaria, where I studied German and English as main profiles, along with Bulgarian language/literature and Philosophy as secondary profiles. Even though that education was not directly connected to music it still helped me improve another useful skill of mine - learning new languages. I am always eager to learn language, skills, and I always leave space for improvement and the different languages and new skills are so interesting to me. Currently I am in Breda University of Applied Sciences specializing Leisure & Events Management in Live Music & Dance Industry (2nd Year). That study is focused on my passion and guiding me on my path to the future I want to have connected to the music and dance industry.

“LIVE LIKE THERE IS NO TOMORROW”

My journey into events.

ILLUSION dance crew (2019-2025)

My passion for events began when I founded and led ILLUSION for 6 years. This experience taught me how to work with different people, because as a dance crew people come and go - it was hard not to change the number of people within the crew constantly because we were still kids as well. Of course as a young teenager it was hard to manage with people older than me at times, but I was still able to lead the others to the right path. I was responsible for the applying process for competitions, I was the "message man" between my dance crew and the Youth Center Dobrich that helped us find a dancing hall. I was the main face for contacting and for making offers to. That was a lot of responsibility but I accepted it with open arms and that taught me how to be organised too. Still to these day I am happy with the people I met and shared these moments with. Now I have given the opportunity to the new generation to create something beautiful in the name of the dance crew and because of them "ILLUSION" is still active.

K-JP Festival/V2 (2020 & 2022)

In 2020 I saw an opportunity to introduce K-pop, Korean culture and Japanese dance culture to my community in the city I lived in at the moment (Dobrich, Bulgaria). The Youth Center Dobrich had the possibility with help to fund the creation of an event. I was skeptical at first, but I wanted to try and fix a problem we were facing - our city was far away from the capital which was really active with competitions and they were not very accepting of people from other cities. That motivated me to create the "Korean-Japanese Fest" (K-JP Fest in short). For an unknown event a lot of groups and crews were willing to apply so they could help us out. The making of the program was hard because we had to think of a way to be creative and unique. We had dance workshop, warmed up and free ramen, guess the anime, guess the K-pop song, etc. We had thought of it all - my crewmates helped me so much as well and they supported me the  whole way. The feedback we got from this festival was really positive and people even demanded a second version which was able to create in 2022. People were really happy and still to this day ask me if I will organize this festival. Maybe some day in the future I would be able to actually achieve this dream with all the knowledge I'll get from the industry.

Why the Netherlands? Why BUas?

Choosing Breda University of Applied Sciences

My love for music and dance events led me to search for the best program in Europe for specializing in Live Music & Dance events. At first, I was really unsure if I should apply or not because I was still looking at the possibilities in my home country. After some long time and already in my last year in high school I decided to try and apply with the help of Unify (a Bulgarian agency helping Bulgarian students apply for universities abroad) I organised what document I needed, I wrote and translated them and sent them to BUas. Luckily enough I was accepted from the early applying deadline. From then on I was excited to see what was expected for me in this study. I met with people from upper years and they explained how happy they are that they were creating something they have dreamed of, something they worked so hard for. It made me realize how much I want to create meaningful and beautiful events for the people in my industry.
